Nepal scribes to fight for press freedom

Hundreds of journalists marched in the streets of Kathmandu Wednesday morning calling for full press freedom in the country.
Media personnel, rights activists and professionals joined a rally organised by the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) from Baneswore to Maitighar mandala on the occasion of the 51st anniversary of the establishment of FNJ—earlier known as Nepal Journalists Association. Addressing a function at Maitighar mandala, president of the FNJ, Bishnu Nisthuri, said journalists would continue their fight in favour of freedom of expression, democracy and human rights despite government’s attempts to divide the movement. He said it had become the responsibility of the journalists to speak for the protection of the civil liberties. General Secretary of Nepal University Teachers’ Association (NUTA), Rameshwor Upadhyay, said the country had been turned a detainee by the authoritarian regime. He said professionals in the country had decided to join hands with the media personel to defend their own rights as well as that of common masses. Vice president of Nepal Engineers Assocaition, Shaligram Singh, said 12,000 engineers in the country were united to fight against what he called an autocratic regime. Former minister and senior journalist Homnath Dahal, chairman of Human Rights and Peace Society (HURPES) Purushottam Dahal, president of SAFMA Nepal chapter Gopal Thapaliya, former presidents of FNJ Taranath Dahal and Suresh Acharya and general secretary of Sancharika Samuha Nepal Babita Basnet also criticised the government for what they called its on-going attempts aimed at curbing press freedom in the country.
