The Global Action Week under the global campaign for education in the state kicked off with these astounding figures and quite understandably, the topic of the week begining April 24, this year is ‘Every child needs a teacher’. Various non government organisations (NGOs) of the state working in the education sector have come up with programmes to be organised throughout the week. It was informed that public hearings will be organised in every district regarding the quality of education. There would also be awareness rallies, poster competitions and debates in schools on the topic.
The coordinator of the programme in the city, Mita Shree Ghosh informed, ‘‘Before the start of this week, we conducted the survey in the month of January and Feburary and as per the survey, the teacher-student ratio is not appropriate in the state. As per our analysis, there should be one teacher on every 30 to 40 students but there are around 70 students to be tackled by a single teacher. This has an effect on the quality of education in the state.’’ The survey was conducted in districts like Lakhimpur Kheri, Lucknow, Sonbhadra, Bhadoi, Allahabad, Gazipur and Ferozabad. In the survey, it was also found that 48.88 per cent primary schools in the state are without any electricity, whereas around 24.4 per cent schools are dependent on shiskha mitras. The main issues that would be raised through the week are regarding the filling of vacancies with trained teachers, maintain 40:1 student, teacher ratio, achieve gender parity and appoint female teachers, stop privatisation of edcuation among others. ‘‘We found that at many places, parents did not send their daughters to school because there were no lady teachers in the school. We realised that in most schools, Muslim girls had dropped out after completing Class V. For these reasons, we are demanding the appointment of female teachers in schools as well,’’ said Ghosh.
