India, Bangaldesh to discuss water disputes
|
The water resources ministers of Bangladesh and India will make on-the-spot surveys of riverine areas before meeting in Dhaka in June to resolve long-pending problems related to the rivers shared by the two neighbours.
Bangladesh’s Minister for Water Resources Hafizuddin Ahmed and his Indian counterpart Saifuddin Soz will visit the river areas on the borders on June 5 and June 8, respectively, the Daily Star newspaper said. After the visits, the two ministers will sit together in Dhaka to discuss problems related to sharing of water resources, Ahmed told the BBC Bangla Service Saturday night. The visits are taking place following a decision taken at the last Joint Rivers Commission (JRC) conference here in 2005. The Ganga Water Treaty of Dec 12, 1996, has laid down the parameters for sharing of Ganga (called Padma in Bangladesh) waters, particularly during the summer months when the flow of water slows down. However, the neighbours have disputes over its implementation and a number of tributaries that flow from upper riparian India to Bangladesh. India eNews |
