India going slow in reducing hunger, says Global Hunger Index

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) based in Washington DC has expressed concern that most countries of the world will not reach Millennium Development Goal targets related to hunger and child mortality, if progress continues at current rates, citing the Global Hunger Index (GHI).

Only two regions of the world – Latin America and the Caribbean and East Asia and the Pacific – are on track to reach all MDG targets related to hunger and child mortality.

India also figures in among the countries that have made “notable progress” and is “very close to being on track to achieve the Global Hunger Index target based on the Millennium Development Goals by 2015”.

It is a second such Index that has been released in a row by IFPRI in association with German Agro-Action and Concern Worldwide. The GHI uses a multidimensional approach that simultaneously captures various aspects of hunger and malnutrition. Three indicators – the proportion of calorie deficient people, child malnutrition and child mortality – were combined into one index and then countries were ranked accordingly.

The GHI ranks countries for six different years to measure progress over time. It has been calculated for 1981, 1990, 1992, 1997, 2003, and 2004. The most recent round ranks 118 countries.

From South Asia, Afghanistan was not included because there was no data available for that country.

The Index, however, recognises that despite the negative setbacks, every region has experienced some progress.
