Government responds to Janadesh demands

New Delhi: Conceding to the demands of the landless tribals and dalits, the Central Government announced the decision to form a ‘Committee on State Agrarian Relations and the Unfinished Task in Land Reforms’.

These marchers who had arrived in Delhi on Sunday, covering a distance of more than 300 km in little less than a month, were earlier not allowed to march up to Parliament and were kept in captivity at Ramilila Grounds in old Delhi area.

In the afternoon, the Union Minister for Rural Development, Raghuvansh Prasad Singh visited the protest site to pacify the people, who had by then started becoming restive.

Announcing the decision in front of over 25,000 protesting people, the minister said that the committee would carry out required field surveys and studies, collate the necessary data and make recommendations to the National Land Reforms Council to be headed by the Prime Minister.

The committee will comprise the experts and will be headed by Union Minister for Rural Development. It will look into all related issues, including land reforms and make specific recommendations on the policies related to land, speedier disposal of land disputes and necessary judicial reforms.

The government release says: “The broad terms of reference of this committee would, among others, include detailed consideration of and making recommendations on the issues related to ceiling on land holdings, distribution of land to the eligible persons, including the landless and homestead landless and for ensuring their possession, speedier disposal of land-related court cases and necessary mechanisms for the same including setting up of fast track courts at various levels.”

However, the committee will only have recommendatory powers and its recommendations will not be a binding on the state governments.

Welcoming the decision, Mrityunjay, an activist of Ekta Parishad, said: “The decision satisfies us. It is now up to the government to keep its promise. We shall wait and watch.”
