Exploring gender and development initiatives
The latest issue of Gender & Development, Volume 15, No. 3, November 2007 highlights the role of media in advocating gender based issues by sharing stories on women and media.
Contributors include Lesley Abdela, Gender adviser in Nepal to the UN Chief Humanitarian Coordinator. Her chapter “Anyone Here Been Raped and Speaks English?” brings the outcome of workshops held in Albania and Senegal for editors and journalists on gender-based violence and sex-trafficking. Abdela, apart from specialising in gender in development and conflict reconstruction, has also written features for The Times of London, The Guardian, The Independent, Washington Post, etc. “Making Every Voice Count: A southern Africa case study”, an article by Colleen Lowe Morna posits a question on status of gender development in South Africa. The writer is the Director, Gender Links Associates and former CEO of the South African Commission on Gender Equality. Sarah Kamal, a Media specialist pursuing doctoral studies at LSE, provides an account of her experience in Afghanistan since 2001 in her article “Development On-Air: Women's radio production in Afghanistan”. The edition also includes chapters on Feminist Media coverage of war, African women blogging, sex-selective abortion in India, asylum seekers in Britain, disappeared women. Since 1993, Gender & Development has promoted and supported dignified, decent and sustainable development founded on equality between women and men.
